S01 E11: Ballet at Sadler’s Wells

Simon Wolstencroft | The X Generation | S01 E11: Ballet at Sadler’s Wells

The Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London is the backdrop for today’s episode.

Back in 1988, The Fall had recorded 11th studio album: I Am Kurious Oranj which combines studio recordings with tracks recorded live during performances in Edinburgh in August 1988.

The Fall collaborated with contemporary dance group, Michael Clark & Company. The music from the album was used in a ballet: I Am Curious, Orange and is considered one of the Fall’s strongest albums.

The hoi polloi who came to see the show in droves, like Simon, didn’t really know what it was all about, but they lapped it up!

After each day’s work at the theatre, the band would retreat to The Harlequin Pub round the corner – a popular haunt for backstage techies and members of the orchestra, escaping from the theatre. That’s where Si saw Kevin Rowland, frontman for Dexys Midnight Runners, in a dress and a pair of high heels. That’s show biz for you!

Season One of The X Generation brings you key moments in Simon Wolstencroft’s musical career that have influenced some of the greatest Manchester bands of all time.
